Description
Eight years after Ben Silverman left his band on the altar of stardom, Da Funk reunites at the Roseland, in New York City. A record deal appears. Drawn back into the fast and loose world of funk, Ben encounters Alison, a long-lost love. Meanwhile, his wife, Ingrid, grapples with her own dark past. At her side is Ethan, a college friend. The marriage explodes, with heartbreaking consequences. Ben must confront the problems of his life, his music, and his legacy to his children—or risk losing everything that matters to him.
Tragic, sexy, and funny, this exuberant page-turner from Best New American Voices nominee K. Wergland asks the question of what it means to be a man in the here and now—and answers with empathy and wit.

The stage door closed behind him, snuffing the lights of Manhattan office towers and the warmth of an unseasonable fall day. Ben found himself in a low-ceilinged corridor painted flat black, like an avant-garde theatre. An air-conditioned hum replaced the cries of bloggers and groupies and the clicking of cameras.
The bare legs of the Goth chick who had opened the door disappeared around a corner and he scrambled to keep up, turning momentarily to make sure his wife, Ingrid, was still with him. She looked up, flashing a smile, her arm wrapped around the shoulders of ten-year-old Ava, the child of his first marriage.
Ben transferred the handle of his gig bag from one claustrophobic hand to the other, feeling the air cool his palms. It had been eight years since he’d played the Roseland. He’d had six weeks to regain his chops.
To be precise: He’d had five weeks and five days to regain a fraction of his former ability. “It’s like learning to dance at your wedding,” he had boomed at his wife, the day he had agreed to do the show. “You just need to master a few moves.” That was exactly what he had: a few moves. And three thousand fans, waiting for the performance to begin.
